Grey pulled the car over at the intersection. His contact inside the guild had promised to meet him here. In the distance he could make out the side of a red barn. It stood in stark contrast the snow that surrounded it. The snow covered field to his right held the remains of a bond fire that was surrounded on all sides by a variety of snow covered seating options. Abandoned lawn chairs, logs, and incongruously a burgundy couch.

The car idled and blasted artificial heat. Grey had driven three hours to meet his contact in the middle of nowhere. He was here because his boss, Clarisse, wanted to take a chunk out the the peacekeeper’s guild. No longer content taking small nibbles and working around them, she was determined to make a name for herself amongst vampire kind.

A blue sedan pulled up on the opposite side of the road and parked. The woman behind the wheel had shoulder length straight blond hair. She got out the car, walked over to his and got into the passenger seat. She pierced him with sapphire eyes. “You weren’t followed?”

Grey frowned at her. “What have you got for me that you needed an in person meeting?”

She stared off into the distance in the direction of the barn. “I agreed to help you to help the mixed breeds. Well, they caught my brother in a random dna screening. We’d been so careful until now. I’ve always been able to warn him or bribe the testers or the analysis. But not this time.

They know he’s more than just a vampire. They aren’t working on puzzling out what the not vampire parts are. It would almost be worse for them if they did. Death would be better. I need your help to free him and smuggle him to a country with less strict laws about interspecies breeding. Maybe Denmark.”

Grey stared at her in silence a few heartbeats. “Are you sure you were’t followed? They’ve got to wonder how he wasn’t caught in their screenings. Who better than a high placed sister to circumvent their efforts?”

“No one knows we share a father.”

“They have your blood and his blood. And they’re not idiots. They’ll know someone has been helping him.”

“Take my request to Clarisse. Getting him out from under their nose would be a feather in her cap.”

“And what about you?”

She let loose a bitter laugh. “I knew the moment I started helping you all that I wasn’t going to live to see the guild’s demise.”
